Troubleshooting Common Coating Defects

07 Sep, 2026
Even with mature equipment and qualified raw materials, vacuum coating and spray processing still encounter various surface defects in mass production. Understanding typical defects, root causes and improvement approaches helps international buyers evaluate factory technical capacity and communicate modification requirements efficiently.

Even with mature equipment and qualified raw materials, vacuum coating and spray processing still encounter various surface defects in mass production. Understanding typical defects, root causes and improvement approaches helps international buyers evaluate factory technical capacity and communicate modification requirements efficiently.

Major vacuum coating defects include poor adhesion, pinholes & particle spots, hazy foggy finish and uneven film thickness. Poor film peeling usually comes from insufficient surface cleaning, improper plasma activation or unstable vacuum degree. Pinholes and particle spots relate to dust contamination inside chambers, dirty fixtures and unclean incoming workpieces. Foggy surfaces originate from gas pollution during deposition. Uneven film thickness frequently occurs on deep cavity complex parts caused by unreasonable fixture rotation layout. Countermeasures focus on strengthening pre cleaning, maintaining clean room environment and optimizing fixture and sputtering target arrangement.

For spray processing, frequent defects cover orange peel, pinholes, paint peeling, color deviation and paint film bubbles. Orange peel texture arises from improper spray gun distance, atomization pressure or paint viscosity. Pinholes form when solvent boils too fast during curing phase. Paint peeling mostly traces back to incomplete degreasing and insufficient surface activation. Color deviation connects with paint batch difference and unstable curing parameters. Bubbles are triggered by residual moisture on workpiece surface. Solutions involve adjusting spraying parameters, optimizing curing curve and tightening pre treatment management.

Most coating failures root in pre treatment instead of raw coating materials. Both vacuum and spray processes are extremely sensitive to surface cleanliness. When defects emerge during sampling, buyers should record defect phenomenon with photos, push suppliers to locate fundamental root causes rather than simple re work, request corrective action records and re validate revised samples before mass production launch.

Some defects belong to inherent process limitations. Ultra deep inner holes cannot achieve perfect uniform vacuum coating film. Under such circumstance, switching to spray processing or redesigning product structure becomes reasonable solution. Do not accept blind re coating without root cause analysis, as defects will easily repeat.
